Malta's climate is heavily influenced by the the sea and is typical of other Mediterranean climates.

Malta has just two seasons. Summer which is hot and dry and winter which is mild and rainy. Due to this Mediterranean climate Malta experiences problems with water supply and depends on underwater reserves of fresh water.

Due to strong north and north-easterly winds winters can often feel quite chilly.

The table below shows the average temperatures in degrees Centigrade throughout the year in Valletta, Malta. As you can see the warmest months are June, July, August and September.

The highest temperature ever recorded  was 43.8 °C in August 1999 at Luqa International Airport. The lowest temperature ever recorded was 1.2 degrees Centigrade in February 1985 at Valletta.

The summer months are the most popular time to visit Malta due to the warm temperature and extra hours of daylight. Between May and September the Maltese islands get very busy with holidaymakers.

Due to the pleasant water temperatures Malta is a popular beach holiday destination with the beach season lasting as late as October. The table below shows average water temperature in Valletta in degrees Centigrade throughout the year.

Malta experiences almost all it's rainfall between October and February with little rain falling in the summer months. Average annual rainfall is relatively low at around 700mm a year.
